Joan Baez
La cantautrice attivista statunitense, nota come “Usignolo di Woodstock”, è ancora oggi un’icona del pacifismo e della lotta sociale per i diritti civili, in particolare per la sua opposizione alla guerra del Vietnam. Ha affiancato per alcuni anni Martin Luther King nella difesa dei diritti degli afroamericani e nel 1966 si è schierata con Cesar Chavez e i contadini immigrati della California che reclamavano migliori condizioni di lavoro. Nel 1979 ha fondato l’organizzazione Humanitas International – Human Rights Committee per denunciare le oppressioni dei governi sulle popolazioni. Si è inoltre a lungo prodigata nelle battaglie per i diritti civili degli omosessuali e si è più volte pronunciata contro la pena di morte.
Nel 2006 ha ricevuto il Distinguished Leadership Award dalla Legal Community Against Violence. Negli ultimi anni la Baez ha sostenuto la campagna elettorale di Barak Obama e ha dimostrato solidarietà al popolo iraniano in occasione della repressione durante manifestazioni contro le frodi elettorali del regime di Ahmadinejad.
The American songwriter, musician, (often referred to as the Woodstock Nightingale) and prominent activist in the fields of human rights and peace, is still a relevant icon for social struggle for civil rights and for her position against the war in Vietnam. For quite a few years she assisted Dr Martin Luther King in the defense of afro-american civil rights and in 1966, she joined forces and sided with Cesar Chavez and the immigrant farmers in California who demanded better work conditions. In 1979 she set up her organisation called Humanitas International – Human Rights Committee in order to report and repeal governments’ oppressions against populations. For years and years has she lavished in battles for gay people civil rights and has on so many occasions strongly expressed her opposition to capital punishment or death penalty. In 2006, she was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award from the hands the Legal Community Against Violence. More recently, Joan Baez supported Barak Obama’s presidential campaign and has also displayed firm solidarity to the Iranians on the occasion of the harsh government repressions during the demonstrations against Ahmadinejad’s regime’s electoral fraud and irregularities.
