Elizabeth Taylor
Leggendaria star hollywoodiana, famosa per le sue doti di interprete almeno quanto per le vicende della vita privata, Elizabeth “Liz” Taylor si è dedicata in diverse fasi della sua vita ad importanti cause umanitarie, come quella sionista, che l’ha impegnata – a seguito della conversione alla religione ebraica nel 1959 – con la promozione di raccolte fondi per il Jewish International Fund, ma anche a supporto del diritto degli ebrei sovietici di emigrare in Israele. Tra gesti più eclatanti della perorazione della causa sionista, nel 1976 si offrì come sostituta per gli ostaggi del “Dirottamento Entebbe”. La Taylor ha impegnato molto tempo ed energie nella lotta all’AIDS attraverso manifestazioni e raccolte fondi e a seguito della morte del suo amico e collega Rock Hudson, nel 1985 è stata tra i membri fondatori dell’AMFAR – American Foundation for AIDS Research, per la quale ha raccolto oltre cinquanta milioni di dollari. Nel 1992 ha ricevuto il Premio umanitario Jean Hersholt e nel 2001 ha ricevuto l’ambita Presidential Citizen Medal “per i suoi meriti e l’impegno per fini filantropici”.
Liz Taylor, the legendary Hollywood star, famous for both her reciting skills and for her lively private life, has always dedicated herself to important humanitarian causes as the Zionist cause: she got actively involved – further to her conversion to Judaism that took place in 1959 – when industriously raising funds for the Jewish International Fund as well as backing the rights for Soviet Jews to emigrate to Israel. Liz Taylor has invested time, resources and energy in the fight to make AIDS history thanks to a series of events and fund raising activities immediately after her good friend, Rock Hudson, had passed away, and in 1985, she was a founding member of AMFAR – American Foundation for AIDS Research, a charity for which she managed to raise well over fifty million US dollars. In 1992, she was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and it was in 2001 that Liz Taylor received the Presidential Citizens Medal for her humanitarian work.
